‘We Aren’t Hooked on Handouts’
Challenge Liberian Refugees

BUDUBURAM REFUGEE SETTLEMENT, ACCRA (PANOS) – There are 45,000 Liberians in Ghana - refugees who have fled the Liberian war that began in 1989. There's even a place called Liberia in Ghana. But the Liberians, who live on the outskirts of Accra, dispel commonly-held myths that refugees are hooked on government and UN handouts. In their settlement, they run schools, clinics, build their own houses and have their own businesses.
